Ankündigung des Promotionsvortrags von Herrn Jonas Neuser:

In his seminal work, Stephen Hawking showed that black holes emit radiation following a thermal spectrum, suggesting that black holes lose mass and slowly evaporate. This is in conflict with classical general relativity, where black holes can only grow but never decrease in mass. It is believed that a theory of quantum gravity, where general relativity is quantised, will give new in-sights and provide a detailed description for the evaporation of black holes.

In the talk, we present a systematic approach to black hole evaporation, also known as the backre-action problem, using tools of quantum gravity. While a full non-perturbative quantum gravity com-putation is not yet feasible, we take an intermediate step, where we treat the exactly solvable part of the system non-perturbatively and systematically compute corrections using perturbation the-ory.

In this approach known as the hybrid approach we face two challenges:

(i) In its Hamiltonian formulation, general relativity is fully constrained, i.e. the theoretical description includes redundancies and we have to single out the observable quantities.

(ii) The equations of general relativity are non-linear and mathematically complex. We show how these challenges are addressed in our formulation based on the reduced phase space formalism.

The result is a physical Hamiltonian for the system, describing the dynamics of the observable degrees of freedom, which we computed explicitly up to second order.

We conclude with a brief outlook on future directions within the programme and on the next steps towards the analysis of evaporating black holes.
