Titel: Frequency Combs & Nonlinear Photonics in Microresonators

Optical microresonators are extremely versatile tools to control light in photonic integrated circuits. Tiny ring resonators with diameters smaller than a human hair can confine up to Megawatts of circulating light in small volumes, which is ideal for the observation of nonlinear optical effects.

In the first part of this colloquium I will introduce optical frequency comb generation in these microresonators. The generated „Microcombs“ are light sources with thousands of equidistantly spaced spectral modes that have applications ranging from precision metrology for optical clocks to ultrafast ranging, gas sensing, and channel generation for telecom networks. In addition, I will present recent results on spectral broadening of frequency combs and on the generation of stabilized THz waves.

In the second part of the colloquium I will present work on interaction and symmetry breaking of counterpropagating light in microresonators. The interaction of counterpropagating light can be used for the realization of chip-based optical diodes, logic gates, and sensors.
